It began with the almost-nothing of ‘A wine glass of water on / the windowsill’, only to spread out into thistle seeds, teasels, chaffinches, wading birds, south doors, sunlit tombs, and rabbits ‘kindling in their / burrows’—in short, the whole country we had just visited.”
